Melanin, maple brown sugar, coconut oil, and some more melanin. If you were curious to what ingredients make Curlfest so spectacular, there you go. For those who don’t know what I’m referring to, Curlfest is a one-day event in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park that celebrates and highlights the beauty of natural hair in whatever fashion it comes. Now that I’m finally back in NYC, I had the chance to make it out this year and chileee’ it was simply phenomenal. The moment I stepped foot into the park, I was greeted by a crowd of beautiful brothas and sistahs with even more beautifully styled natural hair. Everything from afros, to dread/sister/and goddess locs, to bantu knots, braids, twist outs, to every curl pattern imaginable was present. It was like walking into another world that I will from this moment forward refer to as Curlkanda. At each turn, I was remind how beautiful our culture is and how much of an impact we as African-Americans can truly make in this country. I’m so grateful I got to experience this year’s Curlfest. We came through dripping #BlackGirlMagic and #BlackBoyJoy. Check out some of the photos I was able to capture during the event. Big shoutout to the Curly Girl Collective for yet another successful event where creatives and naturalists can come and enjoy each other in such an inspiring and positive way.
